From 12th to 15th November 2018, at the Vatican – in the New Synod Hall – the 72nd General Assembly of the Italian Episcopal Conference was held.

Convened under the guidance of Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, it addressed the overall approval of the translation of the third Italian edition of the Roman Missal. The topic falls within the framework of liturgical reform: as requested by the bishops, the new edition of the same publication provided the opportunity to restate the commitment to training, thus contributing to the renewal of the life of the ecclesiastical community.

The interest and appreciation with which the Cardinal President’s introduction was welcomed were expressed in the in-depth interventions with which the pastors focused on the social climate of the country. In this regard, they have ensured a commitment to the growth of a focused and involved faith, in the service of the common good.

Interventions concerned the work of the Episcopal Conference of Italy Commission – which within the context of prevention and training is drafting the new guidelines for the protection of minors and vulnerable adults in the Church – and, starting with the mission, the bishops discussed the presence and service in Italian diocesi of priests from other churches. Lastly, the thirtieth anniversary of the document entitled Meeting the Needs of the Church provided a reason to reflect on and explore the topic. Shared responsibility and participation of the faithful.

Participants included: 224 members, 24 Emeritus Bishops, 31 representatives of priests, religious men and women, secular institutions and the National Council of Lay Associations. Among the significant moments there was the Concelebration of the Eucharist presided over in the Basilica of Saint Peter by Cardinal Marc Ouellet.
